What follows is the estimated timeline for migrating campus computers from Windows 7 to Windows 10 from 2016 through 2018. This timeline is intended to allow faculty and staff time to familiarize themselves with the new operating system and test/upgrade any educational software to ensure it will work with the new operating system. This web page will be updated as it progresses, including more concrete time estimates, self-service install opportunities, and where to find training and assistance.
- November 2016 – Information Technology will communicate with the campus community via email and this website the plan and estimated timeline for upgrading campus computers to Windows 10. This will help set campus expectations for the completion of the upgrade, and address questions and allow for faculty to plan for textbooks and other material.
- November and December 2016 – Information Technology will begin installing Windows 10 on a handful of computers in open lab locations such as TE116a, Academic Commons and other locations to test the upgrade process and verify academic software for labs.
- January 2017– Upgrade lab computers in non-course scheduled open labs such as PH 141, TE 116A and the Academic Commons open areas for further testing and feedback. We will also test Windows 10 on a select number of classroom podium computers, to be determined at a later date.
- February – May 2017 – Allow limited early adopters on the faculty/staff side to be beta testers, possible testing self-service upgrades.
- Summer 2017 – Upgrade all remaining lab, classroom, and public computers to Windows 10. New computers being delivered would be delivered with Windows 10 from this point forward. Computers requiring re-imaging over the Summer 2017 would also have the Windows 10 image installed by default.
- Fall 2017 - Faculty and staff will be able to request an upgrade to Windows 10, possibly through a self-service upgrade. New hardware going out gets Windows 10 by default, and re-imaged devices will be converted.
- December 2017 – No computers will be re-imaged with Windows 7 as of this date.
- 2018 and 2019 – Identify and upgrade/re-image/replace the remaining Windows 7 devices to remove them from the SU system. Focus on faculty spaces in 2018 and staff spaces in 2019.
