Text Message Guidelines:

  • Email is the official mode of communication on campus.  Messages and calls to action should be communicated that way first.
  • Limit the number of text messages you send.  We don’t want students to be overwhelmed and ignore texts the way they do emails.
  • Limit audience size.  If you are attempting to contact every student in your class or every one of your advisees, consider another channel first (e.g.: email, MyClasses).  Then text only those who have not responded.
  • Text messages should be short and transactional.  There is a 160 character limit.
  • Text message content should be high-priority, useful, and timely.
  • Do not send non-essential text messages.
  • Do not include sensitive information in a text message (e.g.: academic misconduct, grades, ID#).
  • Note:  Students can respond to your text message (if you text fewer than 100 students at a time).  However, their message will be sent via email to your Navigate inbox.  If students respond with a question, be prepared to answer.
  • Note:  Text messages sent through Navigate will be recorded under Conversations on the students’ homepage in the Navigate platform.

How to Text a Student(s):

  • Log into Navigate: https://salisbury.campus.eab.com
  • Search for the student you are looking to communicate with or choose a group of students
  • If texting an individual student…
    • Once on the student’s homepage, choose Message Student on the right-hand side under Staff Alerts
    • When the message box pops up, choose Send Text (the 2nd tab)
    • Type in your message, limiting your message to 160 characters
    • Hit Send Message
  • If texting a group of students…
    • Once you have the list, click All in the upper left-hand side of the search results box
    • If you have more than 100 students, remember to click on Select All Items in the middle of the box so all students will receive the message instead of the first 100 only.  (Note: Typically, messages should be sent to far fewer students than 100.)
    • Under Actions, choose Send Message from the dropdown
    • When the message box pops up, choose Send Text (the 2nd tab)
    • Type in your message, limiting your message to 160 characters
    • Hit Send Message
